Surgeries of the nose are probably the most satisfying surgeries we do. Having trained in high volume centers in the USA and India, being inside the nose is really like homecoming for us! From advanced revision sinus surgeries to Nasal septal and roof corrections, we bring the expertise from thousands of successful surgeries to address your needs. Of course many of these procedures come with Dr. Bhattacharyya’s personal tricks to take your results from good enough to perfect, because that’s the only word that works!
Headaches, pressure over your face and cheeks, nasal blockage, yellowish nasal discharge; if this sounds like your life, then you probably have chronic sinusitis. It is defined as the symptoms persisting over 12 weeks or requiring multiple doses of Antibiotics every year. With chronic infection, the mucosa (lining of the nose) becomes thickened and scarred, which further obstructs the delicate openings of the sinus cavities, thus leading to further infection and so on and so forth.
If regular antibiotics fail, and this seems to have been going on for a long time and causing you significant distress, you may consider visiting us. We will need to evaluate the nose in detail and a possible CT scan of the nose. Both of these give us more information to discuss how to treat your condition.
Nasal allergies are incredibly frequent in the Indian climate, and can cause significant distress to the patient. Being told just use this spray and take this pill often does not help, and you may feel like you are stuck. We want to assure you that treatment of nasal allergies is far from static, with many exciting options that can help you. While we do believe in starting from the basics, treatment of nasal allergies is like trying out perfumes: often the choices may seem bewildering, but there is always the right match for you, we just gotta be patient and find it. From medical treatments to office procedures & immunotherapy, come find out what your options are!
Nasal obstruction can involve only one-side or both. One of the commonest causes of nasal obstruction is a deviated nasal septum, which can be precipitated by worsening nasal allergies or a bout of sinus infection. Other likely causes can include polyps, hypertrophied turbinates or abnormal air sacs in the nose (conchae), or even foreign objects in children.
Although surgical fixation of a deviated nasal septum is considered by many to be a basic surgery, nothing could be further from the truth. The nasal pyramid is a complex evolutionary structure which is balanced at multiple key areas. If the vector forces and underlying torque mechanics are not considered during surgical repair, one can end up with a straight septum immediately after surgery, only to have failures at 2-3 years post operatively, as the septum reforms along the same lines of stress as before. Correction of a deviated septum with or without crooked nose is a fairly complex subject which Dr. Bhattacharyya loves to discuss. WIth super-specialty training in both Rhinology & Facial Plastic surgery, we are able to perfectly balance form and function, thus ensuring you not only receive great results, but long-lasting ones.
Nosebleeds can be scary, as anyone who has ever witnessed one will tell you. It is common in children (nose picking, trauma) and the elderly (weaker vessels, high Blood pressure) but can occur in any age.
The most important first step if you are reading this is DO NOT PANIC. No one can bleed out from the nose within a few minutes, even though it seems like a lot of blood. Do use a tissue or towel and press on the soft part of the nose while sitting upright, try to spit any blood that comes down to your throat, but if you swallow some, it’s not dangerous. Get some ice packs, or dip a towel in ice cold water and place it intermittently on the forehead & both cheeks. If possible, take a sip of the cold water and hold it in your mouth, but if that’s too hard, dont worry about it.
Remember, most nose bleeds will stop within 5-7 minutes, and have a high risk of rebleeds within the first 24 hours. Once you visit us, we will address the bleeding point in the most appropriate fashion- either by cauterizing the bleeder (if its bleeding from ONE or TWO spots) or use other agents to promote local clotting if the bleed is diffuse.
If bleeds recur, or are uncontrollable, we do offer advanced surgical options like Endoscopic ligation of bleeders, but that is rarely needed. As always, we have the necessary expertise to control any kind of bleed, and we will get through it, together.
Fortunately, tumors in the nose are infrequent, but that is not to say they do not pose a risk.
Tumors may be either benign or cancerous. Being in an area that can truly be described as a confluence of vital organs, these tumors need perfect knowledge of anatomy, updated knowledge about tumor behavior and treatment options. These tumors should often be treated in a team approach (Neurosurgery and ENT), and usage of adjuncts like 3D reconstructions & Image guidance can help even the most confident surgeon. We believe that if there is a 0.5% chance that using a technology can make the surgery safer, then as a conscientious surgeon, that should be recommended. Your health is more important than your surgeon’s ego!
It is imperative for the treating physician to be updated with the current treatment paradigms. It is equally important, to have frank and detailed discussions so you have all the treatment options on the table before making a decision. When you visit us, you may need different types of imaging to get all the information possible so we can make an informed decision.
Dr. Bhattacharyya has spent 2 years training in these surgeries at some of the highest volume centers in the USA including University of Michigan, Sinai and their ilk, and has trained with Stanford educated neurosurgeons. We are confident we can provide you current, complete and apt guidance in your battle with this disease & would be privileged to be a part of your journey.
Nasal deformities are so frequent that I bet if you look around right now, you will see someone with a crooked nose. The reason people might want it addressed is usually cosmetic or functional.
Cosmetic rhinoplasty is when someone is upset by the shape of their nose and wants it to look a certain way.
Functional rhinoplasty is where the nose needs to be re-shaped to repair the malformed bony-cartilaginous nasal pyramid.
An apt way to think of this is like a house where the roof is the external nose you see in the mirror and the walls and the central pillar are the nasal sidewalls and the septum respectively.
Now, if the roof OR the walls of the house are adjusted in an isolated fashion, they do not align any longer, and become unstable, which is exactly what happens in many failed septoplasty or septorhinoplasty operations.
Having received super-specialty training in both Rhinology & Facial Plastic surgery, we are able to perfectly balance form and function, thus ensuring you not only receive great results, but long-lasting ones.
